Most of the movement in this exercise is performed with the left hand thumb. The octaves A, C and D have the same fingerings apart from the thumb being off the recorder for the higher note and on the recorder for the lower note. The purpose of this exercise is to adjust the finger weight so that the left hand thumb carries no weight and is therefore not restricted. Make sure the recorder rests on your right hand thumb and that it is being held securely with your lips. Whether you roll the thumb or 'pinch' to produce the second octave is for you to chose, but, whichever method you use, make sure that you can play this exercise both slowly and quickly, neatly separating the notes.
