Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Recorder ArchiveRecorder Music Mail is publishing the series entitled Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Recorder Archive. The first publication was published in June 12th 2001. It is entitled Theme and Variations for descant recorder and harpsichord by Carl Dolmetsch. The second publication, published in June 19th 2001 is Prelude and Scherzo by Anthony Bernard priced £ 8.75 + £ 1.25 p&p You can e-mail them: ruth@recordermail.co.uk or go to their website. An introduction by Carl Dolmetsch is included in each publication. Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Recorder ArchiveThe remarkable musical partnership of Carl Dolmetsch and Joseph Saxby (lasting some 60 years) was the catalyst for a significant series of works, seminal in the recorder's 20th Century repertoire, to which many eminent composers contributed. About ninety works in all resulted, many of them receiving their premieres at the now legendary series of Wigmore Hall recitals given between 1939 and 1989. A number of these works have become well known in their published editions and frequently played. However, others remain in manuscript in the Dolmetsch archives at 'Jesses' in Haslemere and hence virtually unknown. 'The Carl Dolmetsch 20th Century Archive' is the title of this new series of publications intended to make some of these previously unpublished works available to the recorder world. They have been carefully prepared from manuscripts in the Dolmetsch archives, often with the additional knowledge provided by attendance at rehearsals and performances involving Carl Dolmetsch himself. The establishment of a contemporary repertoire was as important in the 20th Century renaissance of the recorder as was its firm place in the early music revival. It is a repertoire that continues to provide musical enjoyment and challenges to recorder players who it is hoped will welcome these earlier contributions to it. ORIGINAL PRESS REVIEWS on Theme & Variations CARL DOLMETSCH AND THE RECORDER - A BRILLIANT RECITAL Since its revival by Arnold Dolmetsch, the recorder has won increasing popularity, whether in consort or as a solo instrument. It was not altogether surprising therefore, to see Wigmore Hall full last night for a solo recital, particularly as the performer was Carl Dolmetsch, who has been brought up in the soundest traditions of interpretation and has also acquired an unequalled mastery of the instrument. The special interest of this recital lay not only in the display of technical skill but in the way in which phrasing, rhythm and expression were chosen to suit themusic. The cadenzas, too, had an authentic ring. After his recital, no one could say that the revival of old instruments is freakish or a waste of time. The blend of recorder and harpsichord (Joseph Saxby) matched the music perfectly, and the playing had exactly the right style and finish. A gigue by Telemann, which was played as an encore, was in itself an example of what understanding can do in the performance of old music, quite apart from the decisive retort it made to the belief that all early eighteenth-century works sound much alike and could be turned out to-day by any Tom, Dick or Harry. But 18th-century style can be achieved by a musician who has soaked himself in it, as Mr. Dolmetsch proved in his own 'Theme and Variations' in A minor. Here there was both an expert reconstruction of the manner of the past, and also a challenge to virtuosity which few besides the composer would care to accept. Mr. Dolmetsch made it all sound child's play so that it was easy to revel with him in the skips and scampering. Mr. Saxby's work at the harpsichord was invaluable both in its neatness and discretion, and in the unity of style it helped to create. J. A.Westrup, The Daily Telegraph and Morning Post 2/2/39 Mr. Carl Dolmetsch attracted a large and keenly interested audience to his recital ... Mr. Dolmetsch's phenomenal virtuosity was displayed in his own 'Theme and Variations in A minor' for the descant recorder...it was an achievement for Mr. Carl Dolmetsch, whose skill upon the recorder is unequalled anywhere today. The Musical Times 1939 Mr. Carl Dolmetsch, who began by giving us a short history of the recorder, ended by playing a 'Theme and Variations' of his own, which showed a dramatic senseas well as the freedom of the virtuoso in writing for his instrument to its full capacity. The Observer March 10th 1940 Carl Dolmetsch showed amazing virtuosity with his recorders, particularly in a piece of his own composition. Players of modern wood-wind instruments would find it difficult to understand how so much could be done ......' The Strad. June1946 |
